Effect of excessive dietary vitamin D on growth of soft-shelled turtle, Pelodiscus sinensis under dark environment

A feeding trial was performed to investigate the effect of 1,000 folds of normally required dietary vitamin D level for most animals on the growth of soft-shelled turtles reared under dark environment. The turtles were kept in an environment without light-exposure and fed with casein-based diets containing 0, 3.8, 12.0, 23.4, or 37.2 mg vitamin D_3/kg for 10 weeks. No significant differences (p > 0.05) were observed among muscle compositions of the turtles fed with different experimental diets. The growth performance and feed utilization efficiency of the turtles fed with diet containing 37.2 mg vitamin D_3/kg were significantly lower (p < 0.05) than other groups. Liver and muscle vitamin D_3 concentrations increased linearly when dietary vitamin D_3 increased. Soft-shelled turtles apparently are able to tolerate dietary vitamin D_3 up to 12~23 mg/kg. A dietary vitamin D_3 level of 37.2 mg/kg inhibited the growth for turtles reared under dark environment.
