摩擦配向對垂直配向模式ECB彩色液晶顯示元件光電特性之影響

Rubbing Effect on Electro-Optic Characteristics of Homeotropic Alignment for the ECB Color Liquid Crystal Display

摘要


本文主要研究摩擦配向有無對垂直配向模式ECB(Electrically Controlled Birefringence)彩色液晶顯示元件光電特性之影響。液晶選用負介電異方性的向列型液晶,其在未供應電壓時液晶分子是呈現垂直配向,而這個性質就是造成對比度高之因。實驗過程針對兩部份探討,分別爲有、無經過摩擦配向處理之垂直配向模式試片,並將此垂直配向模式試片分別改變其試片厚度(5μm, 10μm, 20μm),然後測其穿透率、對比度等光電特性。結果顯示在無供應電壓下會有一極暗的狀態,而當供應電壓後未經摩擦配向處理的試片會產生如絲狀條紋而經摩擦配向處理的試片則出現一致性之顏色,且其穿透率約爲50%,對比度可高達500。且此種模式之彩色液晶顯示元件之呈色對所供給之電壓有敏銳之依存性。

We have investigated the rubbing effect on electro-optic characteristics of homeotropic alignment for the ECB color liquid crystal display which using nematic liquid crystal with negative dielectric anisotropic. The electro-optic characteristics of the LC molecules at the on-state with two different ECB-mode cells (with and without rubbing) were studied. The cell gap was control in 5μm、10μm、20μm, respectively. For V<V(subscript th), both with and without aligned cell show a dark situation at voltage-off state. But for V>V(subscript th), in without-rubbing cell show thread-like structure, in with-rubbing cells show uniform color. The experimental results show 50% transmission, with contrast in excess of 500 and while applying different voltage in visible light wavelength reveal different color.
