Political News and the Construction of Newspaper Readers' Political Stance: A Qualitative Approach

Through qualitative in-depth reader interviews, this essay examines how the readers of Taiwanese newspapers evaluate the importance of political news, and how the relations between political news reading and the construction of the readers' political stance as subjects are formed. This essay finds out that while a large portion of the readers interviewed consider political news important, their interpretations of its importance demonstrate the complex and often contradictory nature of the readers' perceptions of and their relations to newspaper political news. Furthermore, newspaper political news indeed has basic influence on the construction of readers' political stance. But these influences are interwoven with myriad other mechanisms, including family background, personal social experiences and observations, and use of multiple media channels besides newspapers. These mechanisms are employed for readers to be reconstructed and/or to reconstruct themselves with regards to their political stance.
