A Study on the Trend of Projects on Taiwanese Crowdfunding Platforms: Perspectives of Analytics and Text Mining

Crowdsourcing has been a worldwide phenomenon since it was first termed by Michael Sullivan when he founded the fundavlog platform. Shortly after his attempt in 2006, platforms like Indiegogo and Kickstarter have taken the world by storm, becoming one of the primary ways for various kinds of innovators to get funded. Flying-V and Zeczec, being the two largest crowdfunding platforms in Taiwan, were the subjects of many studies in Taiwan. However, none of the studies focused on analyzing the long-term development of the platforms. In this study, we employed big data methods to retrieve and analyze the publicly available data from two platform websites. The research findings are: 1. In 2018, Zeczec surpassed Flying-V as the leading crowdfunding platform in Taiwan, while projects on Flying-V receive more funds on average. 2. Crowdfunding projects in technology and design perform better in Taiwan. On the other hand, popular categories such as gaming and media production do not perform well as they do on Kickstarter. 3. The use of rich media such as images and videos increases over time, which is in line with expectations. 4. The keywords of the projects on Zeczec are more diverse, helping the platform to attract backers from more dissimilar backgrounds.
