Secondary Metal Resource Recycling in Taiwan

The recycling of secondary metals has played an important role in providing metal resources for the developing economic growth in the past two decades in Taiwan. In 1983, the nation's needs for steel, copper, zinc, and aluminum were supplied through recycling amounting to about 32%, 48%, 80%, 40%, and 15% respectively, for these metals. The recycling process is labor intensive and often accompanied by environmental pollution. Therefore, in 1984 and 1987, the government established two separate mixed metal scrap processing areas in southern Taiwan, to allocate and centralize recyclers. This action has promoted recycling technology and pollution control. There are 352 recycling factories in the two processing areas. The total capital investment has been about NT$ 1.5 billion (about US$ 0.5 billion). More than 85% of the total metal scrap processed in this country was imported in 1988. For the reason of environmental protection, the importance of domestic scrap will increase gradually in the future.
