Seismic devices made of extra-low yield strength steels have been demonstrated their superior capability in absorbing vibration energy imposed on structure by earthquake, therefore protects the main structure from damage. Extra-low yield strength steels with thickness higher than 16 mm have been successfully developed and commercializaed in China Steel Corporation and used in seismic devices in the construction of a high rise building in Hsin-chu. This paper is to introduce the development of thinner extralow yeild strength steels below 16 mm to meet the marketing requirement. The yield strength of thin plates is invariantly strengthened by ferrite grain size refining effect in rolling process. To diminishing the yeield strength, heat treatment methods of steels had been studied, a grain coarsening annealing heat treatment has been established and applied in the production line and consequently 8mm in thickness extralow yield strength thin steels possessing yield strength below 100MPa have been developed in China Steel Corporation.
