The iron oxides with low SiO_2, Ca, P, Cr impurities and stable particle sizes were produced from the pre-purified pickling solutions and through finely tuned roasting conditions. The SB, DC,G brands iron oxides of China Steel Corp. have been found applications in manufacturing MnZn, NiZn, and MgZn ferrites. The spray-roasted iron oxides possess the morphology of coarser agglomerates (termed as secondary particles) containing finer primary particles. Since the specific surface area (SSA) and average particle size (APS, Fisher size) of spray-roasted iron ox ides are predominantly contributed from the primary particles, thus coarser spray-roasted iron oxides exhbibit larger SSA but smaller APS. APS is inversely correlated to SSA for spray-roasted iron oxides. However, the size distribution influences the measurement of APS of spray-roasted iron oxides. This effect gives the result that APS is positively correlated to SSA, while the permeability and shrinkage of NiZn ferrite are inversely correlated to the APS of spray-roasted iron oxides.
