The goal of this proposed research is to investigate the effects of copper content and aging treatment on ε-CU precipitation and mechanical properties of antimicrobial austenitic stainless steels .The copper-containing austenitic stainless steels have wide applications and good formability. Copper has rather unique effect on the tensile properties and strain hardening characteristics of austenitic stainless steels. ε-Cu phase precipitates in the matrix of Cu-containing austenitic stainless steel after antimicrobial treatment which provides this steel antimicrobial activity against various bacteria. Owing to the potential market of this steel, it is worthy to study it. Until now this antimicrobial austenitic stainless steel has not been produced in Taiwan. In this research the vacuum arc refining method was used to melt the specimens with different Cu contents. After hot rolling and cold rolling specimens were conducted with various aging treatments in order to study the effects of copper content and aging treatment on ε-Cu precipitates and mechanical properties of antimicrobial austenitic stainless steels.
