Chiu-An River with its origin in the Eastern Taiwan Mountains is one of the eastern Hsiukuluan River tributaries in Hualien County. Often typhoon and heavy rain have caused Ji-Shui landslides in the upstream watershed area that endanger lives and damage properties of downstream residents. For this important study, we performed the following tasks: (1) collected 2005 and 2007 SPOT4 satellite images in Chiu-An River and interpreted the landslide morphological transformation of the watershed area; (2) used aerial photographs to further analyze the morphological transformation; (3) used the digitized terrain data to delineate the scope and area of collapse; and (4) used integrated GIS / RS technologies to evaluate the characteristics variation of collapsed area and thereby, more accurately estimate the collapsed area of Ji-Sui landslides. Results are helpful for Hualien county government and other related units to effectively manage and contain the landslide and the scope of landslide damages.
