In eastern Taiwan, along the east wing of Central Range, there is a huge serpentine resources distributed in Feng-Tien, Wan-Jung, Jui-Sui and Yu-Li areas. The estimated serpentine resource is about 2 billion tons. The serpentine is ranked third as mineral commodity produced in R.O.C. In this study, serpentine and kaolinite were mixed at appropriate proportions and were subjected to solid-state reaction to synthesize cordierite. The cordierite ceramics were prepared from the synthesized powders. Our reserach results showed that α-cordierite can be synthesized from the mixture of serpentine and kaolinite at the molar ratios from 1:4 to 1:2.25 at temperatures above 1300℃ for 1 hr. The cordierite ceramic body sintered at 1300℃ for 6 hr has a density of 98% theoretical. The thermal expansion coefficient is between 1.5-5x10^(-6).
