摘要

大數據這名詞朗朗上口，但統計學並未受到應有的重視。當然，統計學家有其自我檢討的必要。本文嘗試著去瞭解到底什麼是大數據？所謂大數據是如何形成，如何被使用的？什麼學科正在從事大數據研究？我們認為統計可以扮演更重要的角色，尤其在解讀大數據和應用大數據方面。從另一個角度看，大數據也提供給統計學一個前所未有的機會，本文提出一些未來發展方向和想法。

After noting the relative absence of statisticians from the community of practice engaged with big data, we explain what big data is, how it’s done, and who's working with it. The paper then suggests that statisticians have much to contribute to both the intellectual vitality and the practical utility of big data. At the same time, big data challenges statisticians to move out of some familiar habits to engage less structured problems, to become more comfortable with ambiguity, and to engage computer scientists in a more fruitful discussion of what the various parties can bring to this new mode of investigation.
