Effects of two types of banana bunch covers on the bunch development and post-harvest quality of cv. 'Pei-Chiao' (Musa, AAA Cavendish ) were studied for 3 cropping years No significant differences in bunch weight, finger length, finger width, and finger perimeter were found between bananas bagged with kraft paper and blue polyethylene (PE) covers kraft paper cover reduced sunburn damage and uneven degreening of banana hands by 50% in two of the three cropping years Kraft paper cover also tended to slightly increase the total soluble solids and to decrease the water content of banana pulp Kraft paper cover raised the L value (lightness) of both green mature and ripened bananas, the a and b values of green mature bananas, and the a value of ripened bananas Analysis of spectrum of simulated light absorption by the two types of bunch covers revealed that kraft paper cover blocked more blue-green and ultraviolet lights and allowed more infrared rays to pass through than blue PE cover did
