Viviparous seedlings of Kandelia (Kandelia candel (L.) Druce) were grown in media with various levels of salinity in order to examine the effect of salinity on growth of greenhouse-grown Kandelia seedlings. Sodium chloride (NaCI) was applied to sterilized mixed media in irrigation water to give different salinities of 0% (control), 1%, 2%, 3%, 3.5%, 4%, 4.5%, and 5% NaCI. The results revealed that salinity had significant effects on height growth and root collar diameter growth of Kandelia seedlings. Seedlings grew better in low salinity than the higher ones. Seedling biomass reached the highest amount at 1% salinity, and decreased as salinity increased. Salinity had no significant effect on seedling’s shoot root ratio (SIR), however, it affected leaf water content significantly. Leaf water content of seedling was the highest at 3.5% salinity, 4.0% salinity caused severe damage to seedling roots, and resulted in 100% seedling mortality. Total leaf area and leaf blades per seedling decreased as salinity increased. Seedlings grown in 3% salinity had the highest specific leaf mass area and leaf succulence.
