SA乳膠之製備及其對輕塗紙印刷適性之影響

Preparation and Effects of Styrene Acrylate Latex on the Printability of Light Weight Coated Paper

摘要


本文探討實驗室合成之苯乙烯丙烯醋(SA)乳膠塗料特性,並與市售苯乙烯丁二烯(SB)塗料製造輕塗紙之性質進行優劣比較。輕量塗布紙(Light weight coated paper, LWC)因塗布量小,原紙基重相對較低,其表現易受接著劑本身特質及性狀之影響。苯乙烯丙烯酯乳膠具良好之光學性質,於歐美紙品市場之使用量有逐漸增加趨勢;我國幾乎全以苯乙烯丁二烯(Styrene-butadiene, SB)乳膠塗料之接著劑,為比較不同特質苯乙烯丙烯醋與苯乙烯丁二烯乳膠對輕量塗布紙印刷適性之影響,於實驗室自行合成不同特質之SA乳膠。小粒徑之SA乳膠其塗料保水度較佳,而玻璃轉移溫度高者則不利保水度;小粒徑而玻璃轉移溫度低者,會因塗料黏度高,而造成塗布作業困難。SB乳膠粒徑對塗料黏度之影響與SA者相同。要求紙品之平滑度,印前、印後光澤度及乾剝強度高者,宜選用小粒徑之SA乳膠,欲求良好不透明度者則以大粒徑者為佳。SA乳膠之玻璃轉移溫度較高者,輕塗紙之平滑度及光澤度較佳,惟乾剝強度較遜。相同條件下,採用SA乳膠塗料較SB乳膠者具優異之紙品白度、平滑度及光澤度,惟乾剝強度稍微不及後者。

This paper shows how the characteristics of laboratory made SA (styrene acrylate) latexes affect the Light Weight Coated paper (LWC) printability. Restricted by the lower coating amount, LWC's properties are affected by the characteristics of the binder used. In Europe and U.S.A., styrene acrylate latexes have found broader and broader market due to many appraisable properties, SB(styrene-butadiene) latex, however, has occupied almost the whole market of coating binders in Tai1 wan. The objective of this study is to compare the properties of LWC coated with commercial SB and laboratory made SA latexes. Emulsion polymerization was used to prepare SA latexes of various characteristics such as particle size and glass transition temperature. The results showed that water retention of the coating colors increased with decreasing particle size and glass transition temperature of SA latex, higher viscosity of the colors thus prepared created difficulty in the coating process. The effect of SB latex's particle size on coating color's viscosity differed from that of SA, while water retention of the colors increased with decreasing particle size, similar to that of SA latex. SA latex of smaller particle size showed the best smoothness, gloss, printed gloss and dry pick of the coated paper, except its opacity. The higher the glass transition temperature of the SA latex, the better are paper smoothness and gloss, while dry pick reverses. Higher brightness, smoothness and gloss were obtained with the application of SA than SB latexes, and the latter showed better dry pick than the former.
