Factors Affecting Elementary School Students' Consumption of Milk: Concurrently Discussing the Role of Parents

Elementary school children's milk consumption is highly related to the development of the dairy industry in the country. Among the factors affecting elementary school children's milk consumption, we also investigated how parents affect children's milk consumption. Using a structural questionnaire, the purpose of this research was to estimate the quantity of milk consumed by school age children. In addition, a factor analysis was used to analyze the factors that could affect parents' perceptions of milk. Finally, Probit models were developed to recognize the factors that could affect school children's decision to consume fresh milk and the quantity of milk consumed. In particular, this research identifies the role of parents in school age children's fresh milk drinking behavior. The empirical results show parents' encouragement, whether parents drink milk and nutrition perception significantly affect the children's milk consumption decisions. Regarding milk consumption quantity, parents' encouragement and nutrition perception have a significant effect. In addition, children from central and south Taiwan and children between 7 and 9 years old, drink significantly more milk.
