The purpose of this paper is to investigate the properties attainable by impregnation with dispersions of polymers. 10 polymers belonging to four categories are used in this study, they are acrylic resin, EVA resin, petroleum resin and PU resin respectively. The contributions of various saturants to the physical properties of paper such as dry and wet tensiles, tearing resistance, folding endurance, opacity, air permeability and sizing were compared. The results of this study strongly indicate that the categories of polymers play a dominate role in determining physical properties of impregnate-papers. It can be seen that the acrylic resins show the highest tensile and folding improvement and the least tearing retention. Petroleum resin shows the most pronounced effect on the opacity and the sizing of impregnated-papers. EVA resins reduce air permeability at high resin pickups.
