”Social Interest” was a very important concept of Alfred Adler who believed that it was a key factor to adjustment. In this study, following the approach of James Crandall, the author developed a scale (Crandall Social Interest Scale, CSIS) to measure the social interest of Chinese university and college students. The scale was found to have adequate reliability and validity. The mean acore of 529 university Ss was 8.43, with neither sex difference nor age difference. However, students in the College of Education had a mean CSIS score higher than that of their counterparts in the College of Science. This difference was in the expected direction. The CSIS score of Ss with adjustment difficulties at a junior college was significantly lower than that of the well adjusted students in the same institution. Among the university subjects, no correlation had been found between their CSIS scores and those of I-E control, self concept, Extraversion and neuroticism. As a whole, the results were very encouraging and have paved the way for further studies of this meaningful concept.
