This study used addition of Silicon in brass by ingot casting method to investigate the various silicon contents (0wt%~1.0wt%) on microstructure and mechanical properties in brass. The results show that with increasing silicon contents, α-phase region narrowed and β phase region expanded up. When adding to 1.0wt% Si precipitated γ phase. The experimental results show that the structure would change from thin, long needles and islands into stars, when the content of silicon achieves 0.25 wt.%. It means that the fluidity increased, structure became homogenized and grain size got large. According to hardness test can be found that the overall hardness would increase attributed to produce silicon dissolved in the β-phase and β-phase fraction increased. Finally according to cutting test, with the addition of silicon, helical chips changed into elemental chips while chip length is shortened and the weight is lighter so the cutting ability would increase.
