Lunate Dislocations and Perilunate Fracture - Dislocatoins of the Carpal Bones

A review is presented of the results of treatment in 16 patients with 16 lunate dislocation or perilunate fracture-dislocations in 5 year. The victims were usually young or middle-aged men after severe trauma. Associated injuries were frequent; median nerve involvement was common. Although they are so common, carpal dislocations are often unrecognized or mismanaged. Open reduction and internal fixation yielded satisfactory results in most cases. Chronic lunate dislocation and perilunate fracture dislocations present a difficult and challenging surgical problems. All efforts should be made to obtain a reduction of the chronic perilunate dislocation. Treatment of choice is open reduction and internal fixation with or without bone aft in chronic cases.
