From 1989 until 1994, intertrochanteric osteotomy was used as a joint-pre-serving procedure to treat 12 hips in 11 patients with osteonecrosis of the femoral head at Ficat stage II and III. Valgus-flexion osteotomy was performed in 11 hips and varus-flexion osteotomy in one. The average age at operation was 26 years (range 20 to 43 years). The mean follow-up peiod was 40 months (range 24 to 72 months). All patients were evaluated clinically and radiologically on the basis of the causes and the stages of the disease. Overall clinical satisfac-tory rate was 75%. All patients with satisfactory clinicalresults also demon-strated either unchanged or regenerated necrotic area on radiological assess-ment. Analysis of the results revealed the staging and the size of the osteonecro-sis were dominant factors in predicting the outcome of the procedure.
