Effect of Arginine and Ornithine Supplementation on Weightlifters' Fat Free Mass and Anaerobic Power

The purpose of this study was to investigate the physiological effect of amino acid supplementation on physical performance in elite athletes during weightlifting training. Ten elite male weightlifters served as experimental subjects. During normal training period, the subjects took either a placebo or an arginine (A) plus ornithine (O) supplement for a total of 30 days followed by a 30-day washout period; and then resumed the A plus O supplement or placebo. A double blind, counter-balance design was used. Body weight, height, fat free mass, back muscle strength, leg power and anaerobic power were measured to evaluate the physical performance of the athletes. Health safety of using these amino acids was checked by measuring blood GOT, GPT, creatinine, BUN. The results showed: 1) no statistically significant difference in body weight or height, 2) a significant increase in fat free mass in the amino acids supplement group between pre-test and post-test, and there was no significant difference in the placebo group, 3) a significant decrease in the percentage of body fat in the amino acids supplement group between pro-test and post-test, and no significant difference in the placebo group, 4) no significant difference in back muscle strength and leg power, 5) a significant increase in peak anaerobic power in the mino acids supplement group between pro-test and post-test, and no significant difference in the placebo group, 6) no significant difference in mean anaerobic power and power decline, and 7) no ill effect on the athletes throughout the experimental period. These results indicate that arginine plus ornithine supplement during a 30-day period of intense weightlifting training resulted in an increase in fat free mass and peak anaerobic power, and that 40 mg/kg wt of amino acid supplement did not have a short term ill effect on the athletes' health.
