This paper briefly examines ecological planning as it applies to coastal recreation. It discusses the meaning of the term coastal zone and examines some of the different types of coasts. It also explains the various categories of coastal resource use conflicts and describes the major steps in the assessment process for coastal development. Finally, it examines Mission Bay Park, a water-oriented recreational area.
