A Study of the Value Orientations and Leisure Attitudes of a Selected Group of Taiwanese Students

Using the Kluckhohn-Strodtbeck value orientation scale and the Neulinger-Breit leisure attitude survey, the study investigated the value orientations and leisure attitudes of Taiwanese students of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The findings revealed that the dominant Taiwanese students' value orientations were: Collaterality for the relational orientation, Present for the time orientation, Mastery-over for the people/nature orientation, and Being for the activity orienation. Gender and marital status were factors that influenced their value orientations. However, there were no significant differences in the value orientation by their length of stay in the United States and their affinity for leisure. The data also indicated that the subjects exhibited a work-oriented leisure attitude. In other words, they tended to define themselves through their work rather than their leisure, they were ambivalent as to whether their time was really leisure, and their affinity for work was greater than their affinity for leisure.
