Mountain hiking becomes one of the major outdoor activities in Taiwan. But, little research to date has attempted to assess the choice behavior of hiking. This study explored the relationships between recreational environment and choice behavior of mountain hiking. On-site structured questionnaires were surveyed at eight mountain trails of Daken recreational area, Taichung. There were 876 usable questionnaires. This research first leveled the hiking environment into three types, tough, intermediate and easy, according to the difficulties of the mountain trails. After using factor analysis to analyze 33 variables, eight factors for choice behavior dimension were generated. These eight factors were: facility management, physical adaptation, social interaction, natural resource, objective condition, specific activities, types of companion, sense of silence. The differentiate selected factors among three types of climbing-hikers were also analyzed. The findings show that: 1. There are significant relationships between visitors' demographic background and the selected difficult levels of hiking trails. 2. The composition of choosing hiking trails factors are related to the difficult levels of hiking trails. The tough level hikers emphasize on natural resource and sense of silence, while intermediate level participants pay attention to facility management and easy level participants concern on physical adaptation and structured conditions. The results confirm the levels of difficulty for mountain hike do influence choice behavior of visitors. Furthermore, this study provides useful information to improve physical conditions of mountain hiking trails.
