In the attempt to resolve traditional issues of energy shortage and environmental change, nations all over the world are assertively amending their energy policies to meet the global challenge. This article investigates the state of the energy supply and the subsequent strategies implemented by those countries whose importing fuel situations are similar to Taiwan's. The energy demands and R&D investments of these countries are also compared against those of Taiwan. The countries examined in the study are Japan, Sweden, South Korea, Switzerland and Finland. According to the analysis, three main strategies were adopted by the five countries: (1) developing renewable and new energy, (2) effectively using nuclear power, and (3) strengthening the cooperation between government and private organizations. Based on the investigation, the author offers suggestions for policy-making in Taiwan.
