Roles of Gut Microbiota and Sera Metabolomics in Amelioration of Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome by Bariatric Surgery

Diabetes and the related metabolic syndrome have been causing important public health problems worldwide. Among the different ways in management of diabetes, Bariatric surgery (BS) has emerged and reckoned as a very efficient treatment approach. Current understandings of the underlying ameliorative mechanisms in BS treatment were closely associated with alterations in multiple important parameters related to laboratory biochemical test results, reduction in energy absorption, release of gastrointestinal hormones, reduction in adipose tissues and body weight, and recently, gut microbiota structure and sera metabolites. In this review, we first make a background introduction on diabetes and BS. This is followed by presenting the recent developments in gut microbiota and sera metabolomics in relation to BS effects. While BS operations are still under intensive development, roles of gut microbiota and its related sera metabolomics are shown to significantly affect efficacy of amelioration of diabetes.
