Patterns of Performance on the Revised Beta Examination-Second Edition in Persons with Mental Retardation: Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analyses

The latent structure of the Revised Beta Examination-Second Edition (Beta-II) was examined in 125 adolescents and adults with mild to moderate mental retardation during the period from January, 2001, through February, 2002. The mean age of the sample was 20.8 (SD = 3.7) and ranged from 16 to 37 years. Years of education completed ranged from 6 to 12 years (M = 10.9, SD = 1.6). The results of the confirmatory factor analysis suggest that a hierarchical model with g at the apex and two subordinate factors Perceptual Speed and Conceptual Reasoning provides an adequate account of the theoretical components underlying the Beta-II IQ, which are robust across sex and levels of mental retardation. Perceptual Speed comprised Mazes, Coding, and Clerical Checking subtests, whereas Conceptual Reasoning was made up of Paper Form Boards, Picture Completion, and Picture Absurdities subtests. Moreover, a significant discrepancy was found in the performances between the Perceptual Speed and Conceptual Reasoning dimensions, with the raw percentage correct scores in the Perceptual Speed higher than those of the Conceptual Reasoning.
