This present study surveyed the health status and physical function of the elderly lived in the nursing home facilities in Tainan area. This current study used a questionnaire and the Physical Performance Test (PPT). Questionnaires included questions such as age, sex, occupation, number of disease, and number of medication used and a questionnaire (Barthel Index) for activity of daily living ADL) to assess ADL. The mean age was 76.4±7.0 years, height 161.6±5.5 cm, weight 59.8±8.2 Kg. For the number of disease, the mean was 2.2±0.8. The average time stayed in the institution was 3±2.7 years. For the self-reported health status, 23 people (38%) considered themselves as moderate, 18 people (30%) as good, 12 people (20%) as poor, 7 people (12%) as excellent and no one rated as very poor. For self-reported activity level, most people (considered their own activity level as little (27 people, 45%) and very little (20 people, 33%). The mean of PPT score was 20.0±2.6. The results of Barthel Index was 91.8±7.0. The mean of grip strength was 14.2±6.6 Kg. For correlation study, the correlation coefficient for age and grip strength was r=-0.27 (p<0.05), for PPT and Barthel Index was r=0.52 (p<0.0l). The assessment of health status and physical function of the elderly living in a long term care facility will help us understand the characteristics of this group of people. Based on that, we will be able to supply better services for them.
