BIM-BASED MODEL TO SUPPORT QUANTITY TAKEOFFS IN CONSTRUCTION DAILY REPORTS

Recording of Construction daily report is one of the most crucial jobs in construction management. Within the report, detailed record of number of workers, equipment usage quantity, and most importantly the quantitative information of what was accomplished daily can be used to evaluate or manage construction progress. However, it is difficult to make quick estimation of cost items finished in one day because construction project often associates to various cost items such as raw materials like steel, wall forms, and concrete… etc. Hence, in tradition, skilled engineers will need to be on site to make estimations subjectively according to their experience, in which lowers the accuracy of these daily reports. This study proposed a method using BIM (Building information modeling) as support to calculate daily completion quantity of each construction project. This method develops a relationship between component cost items (columns, beams, slabs, and walls) and quantity takeoff, so that when an engineer records cost item used quantity (for example, 10 main steel rebar of beam and 1 side of wall form) or records completion percentage (for example, completed 80% of main steel rebar of beam and 50% of wall form), estimation of daily completion quantity will be calculated. By applying it to a case study, the results show the proposed method can indeed support quantity estimation in daily construction reports, and future study can aim to improve proposed method by making it more automatic.
