Severe lead contamination in drinking water occurred in Flint, Michigan in 2015. This water crisis triggered a nation-wide investigation in the US and widespread contamination was found across the country. A recent survey in Canada also found that lead contamination is common in many drinking water systems. This article provides a comprehension review of lead regulations in different countries, recent lead contamination incidents, sources of lead and the factors trigger lead release into drinking water. Finally, the implications for Taiwan in preventing lead contamination were discussed and directions for future work were identified in order to safeguard the public from lead water crisis.
