The paper discusses John Dewey's two-year trip to China from 1919 to 1920, focusing particularly on what he thought and learned during the trip and what implications we can draw from his experiences regarding the promotion of global democracy. The paper is divided into three sections: first, what happened to Dewey in China, what he learned, and how he transformed these experiences into meaningful learning events; second, how Dewey attempted to study the China problem via the pragmatic sense of continuous experimentation and inquiry; third, how Dewey's experiences in China influenced his matured thinking about democracy. In conclusion, the paper delineates some implications for how we should promote and deepen democracy in today's globalizing world.
