This brief essay provides three reasons why it is important to read Jacques Maritain's writings on aesthetics, art, and the philosophy of art. The author notes that, while there are historical and general philosophical grounds to read Maritain's work on these topics, a primary reason is that Maritain's views challenge contemporary ”received ideas” of the nature of art. After identifying some of the principal characteristics of Maritain's philosophy of art, the author notes that recently there has been some increase in interest in Maritain's work, and that rereading his writings is particularly valuable today.
