在當代中華新士林哲學各家之中,趙雅博神父最能積極地以棄劣揚優的辯證,既學習優點又批判缺點的態度,來面對西方所啟動的現代性,並思考其與中華文化與中國哲學的關係,討論中華文化的現代化問題。餘如于斌批判西方現代性的消極面,羅光致力於傳統中國哲學與士林哲學的結合,然皆對現代性著墨不多;項退結講論西方現代思想家並重思中國哲學方法論,然卻未對西方現代性進行批判。這幾位中華新士林哲學家雖皆同樣深於西方文化並從西方迂迴,返回中國哲學,然皆未能表現趙雅博既學習現代化又批判現代性的平衡而中庸的態度。本文將特別針對趙雅博所著《當代西方哲學》、《改變現代世界的三位思想家》以及《中國文化與現代化》三書的論述,加以討論,以彰顯趙雅博神父對於現代性的中庸持平的觀點,及其對中華文化與中國哲學的期待。
Among Contemporary Chinese Neo-Scholastic scholars, Albert Chao is best in dealing with modernity initiated by the West and its relation with Chinese culture and philosophy with a positive attitude and dialectical methodology. The others, like Cardinal Yu Bin, who has criticized the negative sides of Western modernity; Lo Kuang, who has well synthesized traditional Chinese philosophy with scholastic philosophy; they have not written much about modern western thought. Thaddeus Hang, though having written much on Western modern philosophers and thinkers in thinking about Chinese philosophical methodology, but he does not dig into the critique of Western modernity. Only Albert Chao shows us a balanced and impartial attitude in both learning from and criticizing Western modern thought and culture. This paper will focus on his three works: Contemporary Western Philosophy, Three Thinkers Who Change the Modern World, and Chinese Culture and Modernization, in order to disclose his much balanced and impartial views on Western modernity and his high expectation to Chinese philosophy and culture.
