Qing-feng zha is a ping-hua (professional story-telling book) written by Pu Lin, a famous professional storyteller in Yang-zhou during the Qian-long period of the Qing Dynasty. The story is based on the pseudo hua-ben story San xian-shen Bao long-tu duan-yuan (Bao Zheng Reversed a Miscarriage of Justice After the Three Appearances of the Ghost with Grievance) of the Ming Dynasty mixing with Pu's own personal experiences. The art of telling this story went through eight generations and passed down to Yu You-chun. Yu's oral narration of the Pi-wu La-zi (The Ruffian Pi-wu) was modified and published in 1985. The written version shows q great difference with the existent pseudo hua-ben story Qing-feng zha. The present article attempts to make a deep analysis on and comparison with the two books mentioned above (namely, Qing-feng zha and Pi-wu La-zi) in terms of narrative style, motif and images of characters and also discusses the author, the origin of the story, and the course of spreading of Qing-feng zha.
