By using electronic tape-splicing editing technique on naturally produced syllable final stops, this study examines the difference in the perception of English word-final stop voicing by native speakers of English and Chinese EFL students. The results show that: (1) Chinese EFL students and native speakers of English behave differently in using the vowel length as a cue for the perception of word -final stop voicing. (2) Long vowels are more salient than short vowels when used as a perceptional cue for word -final stop voicing. (3) Sex is not a significant factor in the perception of English word-final stop voicing. (4) Science students use vowel length as a final stop voicing cue more effectively than language students do. These findings have important theoretical and pedagogical implications in TEFL.
