中國學生英語學習焦慮之調查研究

A Study of Anxiety in Chinese EFL Learners

摘要


自1980年以來外語學習焦慮與外語學習效果的關係研究漸受注意。這些研究多以英美人士學習法文、西班牙文或日文時其學習焦慮與學習效果之間的關係為研究目的,其結果發現焦慮是使外語學習產生負面效果的情意因素之一。本研究乃採用Horwitz等1986的理論基礎和問卷,對輔仁大學的51位修讀大一英文的學生作調查。目的在了解中國學生學習英語時,在教室中之外語焦慮的程度如何?其與學習效果之間有沒有關係,再進一步比較中西方學生在不同的文化環境裡,學習外語時學習焦慮有無差異。研究結果發現,中國學生在學習英語時確實有焦慮存在,但焦慮指數不太高,與文獻所載的西方學生學習外語時的情況相似。這種發現在教學上具有實際的含意。然而,與文獻不同的是,中國學生的焦慮指數與學業成績無關,顯示中西方學生焦慮的形態可能因文化有別而不同。

Foreign language anxiety as one of the affective factors in language learning is becoming an important area of research since 1980. Some of the research results suggest that a negative relationship exists between anxiety and foreign/second language performance. However, most of the previous studies have focused on the learning of languages such as French, Spanish, and Japanese by English speakers.The present study uses the theoretical model of Horwitz et al (1986) as a research framework. A questionnaire was distributed to 51 Chinese EFL learners who took Freshman English at Fu Jen University. We have attempted to compare the results of this study with those of the previous studies from the aspects of the existence of classroom anxiety, the anxiety levels, and the relation between anxiety and language learning.The results suggest that our EFL subjects did feel anxious in their classroom, but the anxiety scale was not too high in comparison with previous studies in the literature. Besides, we found no correlation between the language anxiety scale and the EFL learners' performance. On the basis of our findings, we may speculate that our subjects might have different types of language anxiety in the environment of Chinese culture. These findings have pedagogical implications in TEFL and TESL.
