Quantification is one of the most significant methodologies for historical research, especially for the research on religious crises. In his studdies on the religious crises of the latter half of the 19th century (1860-1899), Chen has justifiably adopted such a methodology, which has a great contribution to our understanding of both the periodization and the geographical divisions of the religious crises and a better knowing of the relationship between the crises and the tradition. Despite several shortcomings in his arguments, Chen's book, as a whole, has set a quite good example for researching the religious-crisis development of the Ch'ing Dynasty and of the whole Chinese history.
