This study is to investigate the actual use situation in the reader’ area under the influence of information Technology, including: (1) the flexibility and extendibility of the space, (2) the space-use pattern by university students. 9 of Taiwan’s major university libraries were selected. Methods of study include on-site investigation and interviews, questionnaires for librarians and students. Findings arc: (1) the flexibility and extendibility of space are constrained by the use of IT because it’s requirement of cabling and air-conditioning. New methods of zoning the reader’s area needed to be considered in future planning in order to achieve a economical flexible pace: (2) students’ space-use pattern is changing in different areas under the influence of internet: (3) further study is necessary to monitor the increasing influence of internet.
