While modern nations step in to the 21(superscript st) century with food abundance, diabetes mellitus, a disease closely related to wasting-thirst in traditional Chinese medicine, remains as an important issue in the health care system. How to organize the wasting-thirst texts in accordance with the research method of disease history is worthy of providing new direction for future diagnosis and therapy. This paper reviews the wasting-thirst studies and categorizes them into the six facets of comprehensive disease history, historical division, analysis of canons, disease nomenclature, etiology and pathogenesis, and pattern identification with treatment determination.
