Magnesium deficiency in high yielding soybean Hualien No. 1 is a very common phenomenon of soil micro-element deficiency in converted paddy field in Hualien area. Magnesium deficiency not only inhibits photosynthesis but also diminishs growth and yield potential of soybean. The purpose of this experiment is to determine the best soil amendment method for correcting the soybean magnesium deficiency and to increase soybean yields in converted paddy field. Five treatments with MgSO_4 250 kg/ha. MgSO_4 500 kg/ha, serpentine powder, dolomite powder, foliar spray of MgSO_4 and check (no soil amendment) were included in the experiments. The results showed that the application of MgSO_4. serpentine powder and dolomite powder corrected the magnesium de ficiency and improved the growth of soybean. Application 500 kg/ha of dolomite powder as base fertilizer was the best among treaments and which would be recommended to local farmers.
