Forty-five patients with sinonasal polyposis were assessed with sinus computed tomographic examination. All of them showed bilateral polypoid masses in the nasal cavity with varying degree of obstruction. The inflammatory extension into the maxillary, anterior ethmoid and frontal: sinuses was noted to be 80%, 73% and 58%, respectively with concomitant involvement of the osteomeatal unit (OMU). The posterior ethmoid and sphenoid sinuses which drained into the sphenoethmoidal recess (SER) was found to be 33% and 24%, respectively. Associated findings suggestive of polypoid expansion were infundibular enlargement (67%), ethmoid trabecular erosion (40%), ethmoid lateral wall bulging (35%) and nasal bone erosion (22%). Providing excellent images that delineate the obstructive lesion in the drainage pathway, sinus CT scan aids in functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS).
