A Theoretical Analysis of Occupational Choice for Freelance Fashion Designers in Taiwan

The purpose of present paper is to build a theoretical framework for understanding the behavior of fashion designers in Taiwan. Since most of the graduates from fashion design school stay as a freelancer, but little has been known about their work and initiatives. People just look freelancer designer as an entrepreneurial full of creativity and energetic, but it's just not always the case. On the other hand, many people have an unrealistically rosy view of what it is like to be running their own business rather than staying with the comparative security of being an employee. Assimilate and equate self-employment and entrepreneurship concepts are the main reasons for this misunderstanding. In this paper we try to explain the heterogeneity within this occupation choice, that is, self-employment may be a venture for pursuing big success, or just a necessity for someone with disadvantages. Besides, for more accurate analysis of freelancer designers in Taiwan, we also take the history of development and characteristics of garment industry in this country into consideration. This theoretical framework is prepared for further empirical analysis.
