Femtocell emerges to meet the demand of high transmission rate of the next generation communications. Femtocell Access Points (FAPs) are low-cost cellular base stations. Femtocell which possesses the feature of low transmission power is a feasible solution to provide sufficient bandwidth for mobile communication service in the indoor environment. However, the coexistence of Femtocell and Macrocell will bring about the issues of integrating Femtocell with existing network infrastructure, and the alteration of communication protocols. The management of network resources and elements is also a consideration. In this paper we survey the market trend and the state of the art in standards, and investigate the Femtocell network architecture from functional and requirement aspects. Furthermore, we discuss the future development of Femtocell.
