H.264 is a video encoding standard which has already been widely used in streaming transmission systems nowadays. In this article, we try to discuss the transmission header overhead issues of encoding and transmission the H.264 streams in different strategies , either designed inside the H.264 encoder or using fragmentation packets, to achieve streaming data fragmenting and packetizing. In the later part of this article, we will also discuss possible solutions of increasing the data transmission efficiency and their tradeoffs by increasing the Maximum Transmission Unit size and using header compression techniques. We hope this article can give some references for the design strategy about designing a H.264 streaming transmission systems.
