光子晶體發光二極體

Photonic Crystal Light-Emitting Diodes

摘要


發光二極體(LED)的光輸出損失主要包括Fresnel損失及全反射損失,這些光損失已經嚴重影響LED的發光效率。目前雖有許多提升光取出效率的方法,但是效果有限。為了大幅改善LED的光取出效率,進而提高其發光效率,越來越多的研究將光子晶體(photonic crystal)應用在LED上,預期光子晶體相關技術可能成為未來LED發展的主流趨勢。本文將從說明光子晶體的原理開始,接著介紹光子晶體的製作技術,最後討論光子晶體如何應用於LED上,並比較各方法的優缺點。

Optical losses of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) include Fresnel loss and total internal reflection loss. These losses erode the luminous efficiency seriously. A couple of methods have been proposed to overcome the light extraction efficiency, but the improvement of these solutions is still limited. Photonic crystal LEDs have attracted many researchers' attentions for the higher extraction efficiency. Application of photonic crystals on LEDs should be a trend for the future. In this paper, we have described the theory and the fabrication techniques about photonic crystals. Finally, how to apply photonic crystals on LEDs is discussed, and the advantages/disadvantages of each method are compared.
