Persistent otitis media in children can have a detrimental effect on speech and language, because fluctuating hearing loss result in inconsistent auditory-receptive status. Early age of onset, long duration, and frequent number of bouts of OME predispose language difficulties. For children with OME longer than 3 month or with decreased responsiveness in daily activities, screening of hearing, middle ear function, and communication development should be done. For chronic otitis media in adult, it cause hearing loss about 20-40 Db HL. It will pose difficulty of auditory perception and communication when the hearing threshold of better ear is greater than 30 dB HL.
