Mass Screening for Glaucoma among Chinese

並列摘要

Although there are many reports concerning the incidence of primary glaucoma among adult general population in the world literatures yet none for Chinese have actually existed. Pillat and Chang slated that the incidences of primary glaucoma in patients with ocular conditions are 1.11% and 1.75% respectively. Unfortunately these figures have been cited by others as incidences of glaucoma among Chinese adult population. Experience in the mass screening of 315 persons in a small industrial plant and 404 persons coincident with routine physical examination at the Eye Clinic, National Taiwan Uuiversity Hospital are presented, tabulated and discussed. Methods and criterias for the diagnosis of early glaucoma in this series are noted briefly. The importance of follow-up work for borderline cases is also emphasized. The incidence and prevalence of glaucoma in the age group of 40 years up is about 2% among Chinese. Few people of more than 40 years of age are employed in industry here. It is obvious that the data obtained in this series would have been more agreeable had this segment population been available for investigation. The result of this study supports the opinion of others that the routine tonometry should be performed on all persons past the age of 40 and possible coincident with routine or annual physical examination. The averag normal intraocular pressure among 701 persons was 15.58mm Hg.
