Experiences on the Treatment of Glaucoma with L-Epinephrine

The hypotensive effect of epinephrine has been known for more than 30 years. However, the wide clinical use of the epinephrine solution for the treatment of glaucoma was not well accepted before the works of Weekers and Becker in the recent 10 years.
In the present experiments, 1% to 1.25% l-epinephrine solution was used alone or added to miotic therapy in the treatment of 16 cases of primary open angle glaucoma, post-iridectomy angle closure glaucoma, congenital glaucoma and glaucomatocyclitic crisis. After the follow up study of more than one month, the intraocular pressure and outflow facility have showed remarkable improvement in all cases.
In this experiment, epinephrine solution offers particular benefit for the primary open angle glaucoma as well as for post-iridectomized angle closure glaucoma. However, it is recommended to follow the angle and ocular pressure closely in using the epinephrine solution for post-operative patients.
