並列摘要

This report is the continuation of the report by the authors on 1969 ”The study on visual acuity disturbance among the primary school children in Taipei”. Visual screen test was done on 4572 pupils selected as random sampling from 12 junior middle schools in Taipei by the aid of the students of the Department of Health and Education of National Taiwan Normal University from April to May 1971. The result of the servey disclosed that among 4572 pupils there were 3338 or 73.01% who failed to read 20/20 with one eye or both eyes; 66.41% in the boys group and 80.48% in the girls group; with the minimum of 58.28% in the first year of the boys group and with the maximum of 85.46% in the third year of girls group. To consider the degree of visual acuity disturbance, who with vision of 20/40 or less which actually need glasses correction for the regular activities in the school 52.02% was found in the average; 45.36% in the boys group and 59.50% in the girls group; with the minimum of 33.68% in the first year of the boys group and with the maximum of 70.51% in the third year of girls group. Further detailed studies were made by the author (Na) among 365 girls of the first year who failed to read 20/20 with one eye or both eyes disclosed that there were 338 or 92.60% myopia, 8 or 2.19% hyperopia, 13 or 3.56% suspected retrobulbar neuritis and 6 or 1.64% others. Another 48 suspected retrobulbar neuritis were found in myopia group, so the total number of the suspected retrobulbar neuritis was 61 or 12.13% to the total number examined. For the degree of myopia in the 338 girls, ther were classified into four groups. The mild myopia, from -0.25 to -3.00 diopter, was 248 or 73.37%; middle degree myopia, from -3.25 to -6.00 diopter, was 79 or 23.37%; high myopia, from -6.25 to -10 diopter, was 10 or 2.96%; over high myopia, over -10 diopter, was one or 0.30%. As 92.60% myopia was found in the visual acuity disturbance group as further studies were done, so the percentage of myopia of the junior middle school pupils can be calculated roughly. According to this results, there will be 74.52% myopia in everage among the junior middle school pupils in Taipei; 61.50% in the boys group and 74.52% in the girls group; with the minimum 51.97% in the first year of boys, group and the maximum of 79.14% in the third year of girls group. We also have tried with the treatment of vitamine B complex (Becotin T, Lilly) and mydriatic (5% phenylephrine) or combined to the groups of suspect retrobulbar neuritis and myopia for one month duration with some improvement.
