Totally 2177 first-visit cases attending, from 1962 to 1974, Muscle Clinic of the Department of Ophthalmology in N.T.U.H. were analyzed to determine, if possible, the prevalence of Strabismus in Taiwan. Results we got are as follows: (1) Among 1690 strabismic patients, 930 (55%) were male and 760 (45%) female. (2) Positive family history was inquired from about one sixth (17.3%) of the patients. (4) About 77% of the crossed eyes examined were hyperopic, comparing the incidence of 20-25% hyperopes among the general population. In wall-eyes, the status of refraction was nearly of the same distribution as that in general population. 55% myopia in exoderation (5) Accommodation was reckoned to be related to half (50.9%) of the inner squinters. (6) Significant A-V pattern was demonstrated in about one third of the horizontal deviations. (7) Fifty % of the Muscle Clinic patients were amblyopic; among them 38% showed no squinting. Nearly half of the strabismic patients had lazy eyes. (8) Strabismus (33.1%) and anisometropia (34.4%) played, respectively, a role of over one third as the cause of subnormal vision. Ametropia occupied 16.3%. (9) The fixation pattern was found to be eccentric in 43% of the amblyopic eyes. In eyes of strabismic amblyopia eccentric fixation was found in 68%.
